Vehicles on the Road Data
The Prime Minister announced on the 6th March that the Government was going to relax rules on annual EV sale targets with a view to supporting the motor industry who are now facing extremely aggressive US tariffs. This announcement has been juxtaposed by March-25 seeing more new EV registrations in the UK to date. 69,312 new BEV passenger vehicles hit the road in March coupled with 3,897 new BEV LCVs.
In contrast to Tesla’s share price collapsing, they were still the most popular new manufacturer for March with 7,164 new registrations. It should be noted that many of these orders would have been from several months ago, before the anti-Musk rhetoric kicked in.
BMW were close on the heels of Tesla for last month, with 6,029 new BEV registrations. Elsewhere Mini and Peugeot dropped out of the top 5, being replaced by Kia and Audi. BYD, had their most amount of BEV new registrations to date with 3,508 passenger vehicles hitting the road, which puts them in sixth place for the month of March. We would not be surprised to continue to see BYD climb up the leader board as the year progresses.
Repair Costs Data
BEV repair costs for March 2025 were an average of £3,390 in the UK. This has edged up slightly from last month but is marginally lower from the same time last year.
Costs – Top 5 Manufacturers by New Registrations (last 12 months)
In March there was almost nothing separating Tesla, Audi, Mercedes and BMW in terms of average repair costs. In fact, over the last 12 months Tesla and Mercedes repair costs have averaged out to be the same at £3,666. We are continuing to see the trend where Tesla, BYD and MG have higher Labour Costs than Parts Costs, where for legacy manufacturers Parts Costs exceed that of Labour Costs.
On the subject of BYD and MG, they appear to be a significantly more attractive risk from an insurance perspective with them tending to be more than 15% cheaper to repair than similarly priced European manufacturers.
At the other end of the spectrum, Porsche and Jaguar are amongst the more expensive BEV passenger vehicles to repair, but as always, it is worth noting that they have a higher write-off threshold than most other BEV makes and therefore it is not surprising that average repair costs are higher.
