Chinese NEV market grows as BYD joins UK’s Top 10

Chinese manufacturers are continuing to gain traction in the UK electric vehicle (EV) market, with more than 200,000 Chinese New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) now on UK roads. According to Gecko Risk Insights, new registrations for Chinese NEVs are forecast to reach nearly 120,000 by the end of 2025 – representing the strongest year yet for the segment.

For the first time, BYD has entered the top 10 Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufacturers in the UK by new registrations over the past 12 months, recording 19,378 units. This positions BYD just tailing brands such as Kia and Skoda.

MG remains the dominant Chinese manufacturer in the UK with a substantial 143,564 vehicles currently in use. Other notable Chinese brands include BYD (39,795), JAECOO (7,762), and MAXUS (6,928), while emerging entrants such as OMODA, GWM, and LEAPMOTOR continue to build momentum.

The data highlights a sharp upward trend in Chinese NEV registrations, with the market growing year-on-year since 2019 and forecast to more than double this year compared to last. This acceleration underscores the rising influence of Chinese automotive brands in the UK’s evolving electric landscape.
