Gecko Risk – Electric Vehicle Data Insights
7th November 2025
There were 38,780 BEV new registrations in October, which equates to a 25% market share and is up 21% from the same month last year. Perhaps more interestingly, BEVs and hybrids combined (77,088 new registrations) outsold that of petrol and diesel cars combined (71,287 new registrations) for last month.
This year Gecko have recorded 427,533 new BEV registrations, which is 6,810 more than last year, but with two months to spare. Gecko are projecting there to be over 490,000 new BEV registration for the whole of 2025, which will be up 16% from 2024.
Under the draft Finance Bill the Government have made plans to make Employee Car Ownership Schemes (ECOS) liable for Benefit In Kind tax from the 6th October 2026. There are circa 100,000 vehicles supplied via ECOS each year, so this Bill could prove to not only be damaging to employers and employees, but also affect manufacturers and dealerships, putting jobs at risk and stifling growth. Not to mention that this is turn could impact a crucial flow of new EVs to the market, therefore proving prohibitive to Government enforced ZEV targets…
Vehicles on the Road Data

After a strong month in September Tesla dropped out of the top 5 manufacturers in October with Ford taking first place. Audi and Volkswagen kept their places, and Renault were a new entrant. For the 2nd month in a row BYD kept their place in the top 5, this time with 2,289 new registrations. Chinese manufacturers BYD, Omoda, MG and Leapmotors (in collaboration with Stellantis) each all outsold Tesla for the month of October. Whilst interesting, this should be taken with a pinch of salt as month-by-month new registrations fluctuation is something we have continued to observe for Tesla and we would not be surprised to see them back at the top of the pile next month.

There has been little change to the top manufacturers over the last 12 months with Tesla maintaining their place at the top of the leader board, despite a modest October. The only other changes we have noted, are Peugeot and Skoda swapping places as well as Kia and Hyundai.
A further intriguing point is that whilst not comparing apples with apples if you include BYD hybrids in addition to their BEV new registrations, they have actually outsold Tesla in 2025, with 41,023 new registrations compared to Tesla’s 35,455.

Crash Repair Costs Data
BEV crash volumes continue to rise and we have now begun to observe an increase in claims frequency, perhaps down to both cheaper new BEVs and 2nd hand BEVs being made available to a new set of less affluent younger drivers who have less experience behind the wheel of vehicles with such rapid acceleration.

BEV repair costs have been steadily decreasing throughout the year despite a flood of new manufacturers hitting the market coupled with new repair and replace methods. Gecko’s historic monthly repair data does tend to tick up as we fold in some of the lengthier more expensive repairs, however the downward trend is undeniable.

Average Repair Costs for Volkswagen have been remarkably flat since June, whereas there has been some minor fluctuation for Tesla, BMW, Mercedes and Audi, but with them all flirting around the £3,500 mark.
Despite the similar average Repair Costs the breakdown of these for Tesla and the legacy manufacturers look very different. As an example, over the last year Parts Costs for BMW have been 44% higher than Tesla, where Tesla Labour Costs have been 51% higher than that of BMW. By comparison, MG manage to keep their Parts and Labour costs both at a relatively low level, which therefore leads to them having roughly a 25% lower Average Gross Repair Cost than the likes of BMW and Tesla. n.b. Repair Costs can vary greatly on a model by model basis as well as looking at different manufacturers.

Other News
A final bit of news that we thought was particularly intriguing, was that France are reported to have launched the world’s first highway that allows electric HGVs and other vehicles types to charge whilst driving, utilising dynamic wireless charging technology. There is now a 1.5km test segment near Paris on the A10, with the French making plans to electrify 9,000km of roads by 2035.
