Gecko Risk – Electric Vehicle Data Insights – February 2025

Vehicles on the Road Data

The UK saw 30,974 new BEV registrations for the month of January-2025, which was the lowest since August last year. However, this was up 40% from January 2024. Audi, Tesla and Ford dropped out of the top 5 manufacturers by new registration for last month , being replaced by Kia, Peugeot and Mercedes. For top manufacturers over the last 12 months, Volkswagen moved up into 3rd place ahead of Mercedes.

Elsewhere, we noted that BYD had their most new energy vehicle new registrations for any month in January, with 1,614 vehicles hitting the road. This was split into 1,093 BEVs and 521 hybrid vehicles. The appetite for Chinese manufacturers will no doubt be driven by price, however brand loyalty and recognition will still have a part to play. It should be noted that the British brand MG is controlled by Chinese state-owned manufacturer SAIC, and we understand was one of the most searched for EV makes on Autotrader last year.

Repair Costs Data

BEV repair costs continued to edge up as we moved into 2025. Capacity no doubt played a part this, with us recording 33% more BEV accidents in January than in December. Icey conditions and a lag from the holiday season will have contributed to this. It is worth noting however, that average repair costs for 2025 were 5% lower for all BEVs than the same time last year.

Average Repair Costs by Manufacturer – Last 3 Months

Audi repair costs remain the highest of the top 5 manufacturers over the last 12 months, although in January BMW edged ahead of them. Telsa repair costs seem to have been the most stable over the last year, but we record more Telsa accidents month on month due to far more exposure and therefore law of large numbers contribute to less fluctuation. Mercedes average repair costs have been consistently trending downwards over the last six months and they now are far closer to that of Volkswagen than the other relatively more expensive manufacturers.

We noted above that MG was one of the most popular BEV makes by new and 2nd hand metrics. Interestingly, out of the top 10 manufacturers by new registration for the last 12 months, MG by far and away held the lowest average repair costs at £2,304. This is over 20% less than their nearest competitor, Volkswagen.
